The 2007 Sunflower Open All Age Championship started Monday afternoon, October 22 under a cloudy overcast sky. The morning was lost to rain but all were glad to have the creeks on the ranch flowing water.

DERBY WINNERS: From a field of 28, Judges Bill Stubblefield and Tom Milam named S.F. Pocketknife first in the Derby for Larry Smith. Rebel Squire and Lonesome Traveler were 2nd and 3rd for handler Randy Anderson.

The Championship started where the Derby left off and Black Range for David O’Conner, handled by Allen Vincent, was named 2007 Sunflower Open All Age Champion. His was a far reaching prairie race with a find on prairie chickens and one on quail. Named Runner-up was House’s Snake Bite for the Faller’s, Andy Daugherty handling. He tallied one find on quail.

2005 Winner of the Sunflower All Age Championship is

Twice the Man, handler Andy Daugherty.

The Runner-up is Worsham's Silver Cloud for owner/handler Joe Worsham

The Derby: First was Mississippi Hot Rod, owned by Ed and Dee Stevens who were riding to watch their precocious youngster. Hotrod was handled by Mike Johnson. Andy Daugherty handled Twice the Man to second for R.S.Blyth. Third was Rockwood Chief, owned by Bruce Chambers and handled by Ray Warren. All three of the placed dogs were out of sight on the prairies much of the time, and were in the “zone” when seen.

The championship started Tuesday morning with 27 entries. The judges, Gary Jones, and Don Lloyd, named Mr. Powerpack, pointer male owned by Don and Carol Fox, of Licking, Mo., and handled by Andy Daugherty, 2004 Sunflower Open All Age Champion.

Runner-up was Kodak Moment, pointer male, owned by Ed and Dee Stevens of Decatur, Ohio and handled by Mike Johnson.

Bird dog enthusiasts gathered for the 10th anniversary running of the Sunflower Open All Age Championship held October 20-23, 2003 on the Kimbell Ranch, Yates Center, Kansas.


Winning the one-hour 2003 Sunflower All Age Championship was Bodacious Boone, a male pointer, owned by Drs. Barry Gray, Robert Rankin, and Alex Jacocks, and handled by Allen Vincent, Owasso, Oklahoma with a big outfront race and a find on native quail.

The Runner Up was Holler Point Blaze, a female pointer, owned and handled by Rodney Shoemaker, Kansas City, Missouri with finds on quail and prairie chickens.

The 30-minute Derby, was won by S. F. On Site, owned and handled by Larry Smith, Altoona, Iowa; 2nd place was Regent, handled by Randy Anderson, Vinita, Oklahoma; and 3rd place was Wild Horses, handled by Mike Johnson, Corinth, Mississippi for owner Mike Peretta.
